Obsah

Starting with an important film of contemporary Italian cinema, Lazzaro Felice by

Alice Rohrwacher (Best Screenplay Award at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival) we will

analyse alternative film structures to the classic three-act one. In particular,

we will study the structure in two and in multiple acts and we will see how this greater creative freedom that the author takes with time management can result in a free, poetic type of movie, whici often has a less predictable tone than that of a classic film.

Besides, we will interweave the work on structure with an autobiographical research, to be carried out in class in the form of a workshop, aimed at discovering the moment in which a person's existence changes forever; that moment from which a life is no longer the same. We will then try to move this turning point within the structure of a short story for the screen, placing the “existential accident” in different parts of the tale, to see how the narrative changes and what alternative narrative possibilities it opens up to, in terms of genre, tone and overall view of our world.

Výsledky učení

Students will learn how to think and write against conventional formulas to produce original, exciting material. In particular, they will explore the consequences and opportunities that arise from the choice of a non linear structure, in terms not only of plot but also of tone, character arc and management of the characters’ goals

There are no prerequisites required other than a knowledge, even basic, of the classical three-act structure

Literatura

No specific readings are required The lecturer will provide a useful bibliography at the end of the two days of lectures.

Hodnoticí metody a kritéria

An average mark will be given to the writing exercises carried out in class. Participation in the collective discussion will also be taken into account.
