The course is taught in a combined form of contact and non-contact teaching in a ratio of about 1:4, i.e. 40 hours distance learning, 10 hours full-time per semester.
The content of the course Music for Dance of the 20th and 21st Centuries 2 is to provide basic information on the development of music of the 20th and 21st centuries, to gain a basic overview of the development and artistic tendencies of contemporary music, basic orientation in experimental musical forms and their use in other artistic genres.
The topics of the lectures cover the development of modern music in the world and help in the overall orientation of the issues. The focus of the interpretation is on figures of world importance in the 20th and 21st centuries who have made a significant impact on the development of culture and contemporary art, or who have worked more closely with figures in the field of dance. The knowledge acquired should be sufficient as a basic resource and inspiration for further development of knowledge in other subjects in the curriculum.
The themes of the second semester are:
- Music of East and West
- political and cultural situation after World War II
- the reasons for and the shape of the different musical developments on both sides of the Iron Curtain
- A. Zhdanov and his definition of „the correct artistic direction and form of artistic creation“
- the impact of political repression and restrictions on the work of important artists of the former „Eastern Bloc“ (D. Shostakovich)
- the situation in Czechoslovakia (J. Hanuš, M. Kabeláč, K. Slavický, etc.)
- Experimental and alternative music
- J. Cage and M. Cuningham - aleatorics as a way
- M. Kagel, B. A. Zimmermann, L. Berio, I. Xenakis ad.
- new conception of musical time and tectonics - minimalism, seriality
- notion of new sonority, sonic music
- music as a means of new extra-musical communication
- mutual inspiration of music and dance
- Electronic music, electroacoustic music, music with an alternative sound essence
- post-war development of this music (from Darmstadt to contemporary music), main principles of this music

Aims of the study
The student will get acquainted with the basic developmental tendencies of contemporary music and will acquire the ability to understand these developmental tendencies in the context of the development of other artistic disciplines, especially dance.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student is oriented in the overview of the development tendencies of contemporary music from the beginning of the 20th century to the present and is able to apply the knowledge to his/her own pedagogical and other artistic practice.

Evaluation methods and criteria
Written test: pass rate min. 70%
Other requirements: Minimum 80% attendance, proof of attendance at a musical performance.
Note
The course combines monological, applied and interactive teaching methods, and encourages self-study and critical thinking.
Contact in distance form will be provided:
- telephone, email, video calls
- through group platforms for communication between students (social networks, internet, apps, moodle, etc.)
Independent work of the student within the contactless learning consists of:
- Listening to audio (and video) recordings related to the material covered
- studying information from the e-learning course, selected literature on the given topics
- application of information from Internet sources
- reflection on performances and concerts attended during the semester
The student is invited to attend and critically reflect on a live musical performance, ideally a dance production, that relates to the topics covered. The choice of performance or concert is thematically related to the material covered and recommendations are based on discussion with the instructor during lectures and consultations. The focus of the activity and reflection is a survey of currently active Czech and international authors.
