In the Summer semester of their 2nd year, students work on refining their topic, research question, and methodology.

This course is meant to help the students understand all requirements toward completion of the master’s degree thesis, and to know how to structure the work's content.

Classes will focus on thesis development and methodology, introducing common approaches in film studies, such as close analysis of a single film, comparative studies, genre analysis, director- or author-focused research, analysis of specific formal elements (e.g. sound, editing, cinematography), and studies of production, distribution, or reception contexts.

Regular assignments are made to keep students exploring their topic and a detailed outline of the thesis is expected by the April or May (date to be determined at the beginning of the semester).

Students present their topic to a panel of faculty members from FAMU, and the topic is approved by unanimous decision of the panel.

If it is not approved, they must revise the topic within the rest of the semester and resubmit it for approval by the faculty panel (per rollam) by the end of August.
