Every filmmaker who wants to make films and doesn't have the resources to produce them is inevitably faced with the necessity of presenting ideas to other people. Being able to express oneself well, to understand the opportunities on the market, and to have an open mind are all prerequisites for success in the demanding environment of (not only) international forums. At the same time, however, it is equally important to maintain one's own artistic integrity and to be aware of the pitfalls that these events pose for creators. It is worth practising the art of maintaining self-confidence and an open mind all the time.

This seminar will focus on learning about the world of pitching in the documentary industry. Students will learn more about the different European documentary pitching forums and the context that these events present to creative filmmakers - both from the perspective of those presenting and those sitting in the chairs opposite as the invited experts. The core of the seminars is to work on student film presentations. The aim is to provide students with hands-on practice, space and feedback to learn how to express their intentions convincingly and how to impress potential collaborators.

We will also meet the filmmakers who will be presenting their films at the East Doc Platform – and learn about their presentation strategies.

Individual sessions:

15. 2. analysis of the recordings of several real pitching sessions at major international forums, identification of functional and dysfunctional practices

1. 3. practicing different forms of student film presentations, identifying strengths and weaknesses

15. 3. preparation of video materials - demos and trailers - in the context of different types of presentations

29. 3. meeting with foreign guests of East Doc Forum - analysis of the strategy of presentation of their films

12. 4. final presentation of prepared pitches and feedback

Výsledky učení

-The student is familiar with the map of European documentary pitching forums and has an awareness of the opportunities that the international presentation of a film brings.

-The student is able to articulate his/her artistic vision and the topic of the film, both in an informal presentation and in a structured format with excerpts from the material.

-The student can prepare a package of presentation materials: logline, synopsis, treatment, film budget, poster, teaser and trailer. And also himself, because presenting a fragile unfinished topic requires a lot of courage and perspective.

-The student will be able to think through their expectations and the context of international events critically.

-The student can consider the international potential of their film project and identify themes that might appeal to international audiences.

This course is a continuation of the multi-departmental course 305P1 „Pitching 1 - KP“.
