A publicity campaign is an essential part of launching your film into the world. But how does this work? What kind of materials do you need? How do you write a good synopsis? by director and producer Mariia Ponomarova

In her case study, we will embark on the creative and production journey of the Dutch-Ukrainian feature documentary film ‘Nice Ladies’ directed by filmmaker Mariia Ponomarova, which was developed through the Ex Oriente Film workshop 2020. We will learn about how the project was initiated in late 2019, how it was affected both story-wise and production-wise by the pandemic and the brutal Russian invasion of Ukraine, finally launching into festival distribution with international premiere at Hot Docs Festival in 2024. Which decisions and partnerships helped it not only to survive amidst all the challenges but also to find its audience? Which strategies were crucial for its rocky journey? And which collaborations did the creative team establish to ensure that the film is distributed internationally?

CASE STUDY: Metrocosmos (TV Mini Series, 2024)

by director and producer Timo Novotny

Conference Room

In his case study, Austrian producer and director Timo Novotny will focus on three main topics. First, he will delve into the challenges of financing—how to secure funding, the constant hustle, and what it takes to make a project like this happen. Second, he will explore the struggles of production, especially working with commissioning editors—how to navigate creative differences and find a balance between their vision and his unless they fully trust his work. Lastly, he will examine the production process itself, including shooting days, budgeting, editing, and finalizing the project.

The documentary film series METROCOSMOS portrays five European cities from the perspective of the underground. It accompanies people who are closely connected to the stations and trains, as well as commuters who barely notice what is happening around them. The series offers a cinematic journey through the METROCOSMOS, with exciting themes, impressive camerawork and bold editing. As part of the session we will also screen the Berlin episode: Largest underground network in Berlin is brimming with stories. Anton Hangschlitt reveals his passion, Infidelix adds vibrancy through his music, and the artist collective „Rocco and his brothers“ crafts hidden installations.

Kino Světozor, Grand Hall

Pavel “Pasha” Talankin is a popular enthusiastic Russian school teacher who likes small-town life, bad weather, and even dirty panel buildings. His life is disrupted by the war, as he, an employee of an educational institution, must become its instrument.

Caught in the centre of a propaganda apparatus that is engulfing society, he is tasked with documenting everything with a camera. But he interprets this in his own way and records things as they really are, not as the military regime wants them to be.

Bio OKO

Dancing lets them forget about life’s difficulties. In competitions they succeed next to women a generation younger. Their energetic performance overcomes prejudices. They share a joy of movement, a sense of humour, and deep friendships.

War breaks up this atypical cheerleading team from Kharkiv, Ukraine. Sveta moves to Amsterdam with her grandson and other family, but the core of the team remains in the bombed city. The women keep in touch and support each other. But the division between those staying and those leaving is emotionally challenging.
