The course „Across Media“ focuses on artistic and visual techniques and deals with the formal and substantive aspects of the work as well as general orientation in the discourse of contemporary art. The second semester 2024-2025 will focus on painting.

Painting is the center - the reference point, the starting situation. We are interested in all of its positions, experimentation with material, working with format, and overlaps into other media Painting is emphasized in our course; we will deal with it comprehensively, from the stretching of the canvas, through sketches, to the final output, i.e., the finished work. We are also interested in spatial techniques, and (as far as possible) painting overlaps into the object or installation.

In addition to painting techniques such as underpainting, glazing, working with acrylics and oils, you will learn various techniques, frottage, stencil work, (airbrush), textures, pigments and more. The course also includes a field trip.

The course is conducted through the metaphor of an open experimental space. We have confidence in the intuition and attitudes of the emerging generation. We encourage a diversity of approaches, concepts and outcomes. Painting is more than an object in space or a bounded surface. It is an energetic field involving both the creator and the environment. It is an agent operating on many levels. We enable and encourage new approaches, while offering the possibility of empirical knowledge of the already known. Our teaching is in the spirit of seeking the common. The subject matter can be both concept and form. Our approach is supportive and developmental, operative to individual studenthood.

Course Schedule:

•March 6 – Continuing underpainting and building additional layers.
